“De-Centered and Influential”: The Music of Kaleidoscope

Joyu Lee - Volume: 21

Abstract: This article presents a new program called Kaleidoscope, which is a Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) program developed by the author between 2020 and 2024. The program features music composed by Black artists and is designed to be versatile, making it suitable for GIM adaptations, Music and Imagery and Music Breathing. “Kaleidoscope” incorporates vibrant and diverse musical elements that blend Western classical traditions with African American spirituals, folk, and jazz. The compositions showcase rich textures, rhythmic vitality, and expansive narratives. This program supports people of color by addressing the historical challenges of Western classical music and emphasizes inclusivity, diversity, and healing through a decolonial and anti-oppression perspective.
